Traffic Police fine four drivers per day for not using child safety devices

Costa Rica staff According to the most recent report of the Traffic Police, in the past year, 1,405 drivers were fined for transporting children under 12 without the appropriate safety device for their age, weight and height. According to Germán Marín Sandí, director of the Traffic Police, these numbers are published to raise awareness about the responsibility to protect minors. "The children trust fully in their parents, in their grandparents, in their uncles. The minimum we must do, as adults, is to correspond to that trust with responsible actions. There will never be a justification for not having the safety device when traveling with a minor," said Marín. The transit police called on drivers to take the security measures indicated by law. Marin noted that sometimes in using different vehicles, a child safety device does not fit, so parents do not use it. This is inadmissible,  he said. Similarly, the police reported that during the school day, many people send children to school with friends or other family members who also do not use safety devices for children. The police advised the parents or guardians of the children to buy the devices themselves and install them in the vehicle in which the child is traveling. According to the transit police, in 2018, 157 motorcyclists were fined for carrying children under 5 years of age. "The Traffic Law prohibits children under 5 from traveling by motorcycle because at that age the minors do not have the capacity to adequately hold onto the vehicle or the adult." said the police statement According to the Traffic Law, the fine for not using safety devices or for riding a motorcycle with children under 5 years old is ¢215,536.65 colones ($ 358.39).

One of the most heavily reported accidents of 2018, was in January, in the town of Santa Rita in Alajuela*. A 16 year old boy hit his vehicle against an electrical utility pole. The car overturned and causing a 10-year-old boy who was vehicle without safety device to be thrown through the window to die on the road. According to the Red Cross report on that emergency call "The incident occurred at about 8:10 a.m., specifically in the Santa Rita sector. Two unidentified persons were traveling in the vehicle. For reasons unknown, the car was overturned, the child was found outside the car and declared dead on the site, while the driver was transferred in a stable condition to the Ebais on the area.” ---- Did you know that it is illegal to take children under 5 years of age on a motorcycle?
