The U.S. Embassy*
closed its doors to the public at
10:00 a.m. yesterday for security
reasons. The closure was announced to
the public on its Spanish language
social networks.
"For your safety, for our safety: We
have received reliable information
about a related security situation
near our main building, specifically
in Plaza del Oeste, the shopping
center in front of our building. Those
who have routine appointments
scheduled for today, please
reschedule. U.S. citizens who have an
emergency can contact us at 2519-2000
or through the email ACSSanJose@state.gov
to receive more information and
guidance" said the press release.
Some U.S. citizens contacted A.M.
Costa Rica, asking for more
information because they received the
same alert by email.
Shortly after 12:30p.m., the embassy
was reopened continued with its normal
schedule for the rest of the day.
"We have reopened! We have received
reports that the security situation
near the embassy has already been
resolved and, therefore, we are
returning to our normal operations.
Those who had scheduled appointments
with us can come as planned."
According to the press department of
the Ministry of Security, in the
Shopping Center located in front of
the embassy, had been a fight between
few people, in one of the stores. That
situation was controlled by police
officers.
After the reopening of the
embassy, people whose appointments
were cancelled were asked to
reschedule.

According to the Office of
the Historian of the
Department of State, the
embassy was opened in
1854. At that time, Mr.
Solon Borland, Democratic
United States Senator from
the State of Arkansas and
later Confederate officer
during the American Civil
War, was the first
ambassador to Costa Rica.
