The General Directorate of Civil
Aviation prohibited operation of the
Boeing 737-8 and 737-9 or MAX series
in Costa Rica until further notice.
The prohibition included landing,
takeoff or overflight in Costa Rican
airspace.
According to Guillermo Hoppe,
General Director of Civil Aviation,
"the decision was taken as a
preventive measure, primarily for
the safety of all passengers and
crew, as a result of the recent
accidents in which that type of
aircraft was involved. The causes of
the accidents are under
investigation."
Before making the decision, Director
Hoppe said that they took into
account the technical criteria and
guidelines issued by the
manufacturer of the aircraft and
noted that several airlines have
suspended operation of the Boeing
aircraft.
The airlines that provide flights to
Costa Rica and use this type of
plane are: American, Southwest, Sun
Country, Aeromexico and Copa.
Hoppe added that this suspension
will continue until there has been a
clarification of the circumstances
around the recent crashes of the
Boeing aircraft.
The alert about a possible technical
failure in the Boeing MAX series
occurred after the crash of Air
Indonesian’s flight in Ethiopia in
which 157 people died. This accident
occurred five months after the
accident of Lion Air in October
2018, which killed 189 people. The
same type of plane was involved in
both accidents.
In a public statement, Boeing
Company confirmed that it "continues
to have full confidence in the
safety of the 737 MAX."
However, after consultation with the
U.S. Federal Aviation Administration
(FAA), the U.S. National
Transportation Safety Board (NTSB),
aviation authorities and its
customers around the world, the
company recommend to the FAA that
there be a temporary suspension of
operations of the entire global
fleet of 371 737 MAX aircraft.

In a public statement,
Boeing Company
confirmed that it
"continues to have
full confidence in the
safety of the 737
MAX."
Dennis
Muilenburg, CEO of the
Boeing Company said:
"on behalf of the
entire Boeing team, we
extend our deepest
sympathies to the
families and loved
ones of those who have
lost their lives in
these two tragic
accidents."
The company statement
went on to say, "We
are doing everything
we can to understand
the cause of the
accident in
partnership with the
investigators, deploy
safety enhancements
and help ensure this
does not happen
again."
