Three judges, Franz Paniagua,
Alfredo Arias, and Maureen Long, of
the Criminal Court of the Second
Judicial Circuit in Calle Blancos,
sentenced a man surnamed Mora-Monge
to a penalty of 7 years in prison
and a payment of more than $200,000
in the death of a female cyclist
surnamed Mata-Durán.
The $200,000 payment included ¢117
million colones (about $192,393) for
moral and patrimonial damage and ¢16
million colones (about $26,310) for
judicial costs.
Accoding to the case, the death of
Ms Mata-Durán occurred in the early
morning of January 29, 2017. At that
time, Mora-Monge drove his Ford
Mustang car over 100 km/h near the
community of Tres Rios and ran over
4 cyclists, a man surnamed
Alcocer-Alcocer , 54 years old, a
man surnamed Ortiz-Quesada, 46 years
old, a man surnamed Retana-Pérez, 49
years old and a woman surnamed
Mata-Durán 38 years old.
Three of the victims died
immediately. The fourth victim,
Mata-Durán, was hospitalized for
almost 2 months before she died as a
result of her injuries.
After the accident, Mora-Monge drove
to his house where he was found and
detained by the police several hours
after the accident.
Before yesterday’s trial, the
families of three of the victims
signed a private conciliation
agreement with Mora-Monge. The
amount agreed upon in the
conciliation is being kept private.
The family of Mata-Durán did not
accept the conciliation offer and
continued to pursue Mora-Monge in
court.

until being assigned
to a public jail
where he will stay
for a period of 6
months while the
sentence is
finalized.
Mora-Monge’s defense
attorney said that
they will appeal the
sentence.
