President Carlos Alvarado and
Environment Minister Carlos
Rodríguez signed Executive Decree
No. 41578, which extends the
moratorium on oil exploitation until
2050.
The decree signed on Monday in the
Presidential House says:
Article 1. Refurbish article 1 of
Decree 36693-MINAET of August 1,
2011:
"A national moratorium is declared
until December 31, 2050, for the
activity that has the purpose of
developing the exploration and
exploitation of oil deposits in the
continental and marine national
territory."
Regarding his decision to extend the
prohibition until the year 2050,
President Alvarado said: "the
commitment with current and future
generations is to keep our country
free of activities that could harm
our ecological balance."
In signing the new agreement,
Minister Rodríguez said that this
decree is in line with the
government's commitment to
decarbonize the economy.
"The country has set out to lay the
foundations for a new green economy,
promoting the use and sustainable
use of natural resources in order to
meet the commitments made in the
2030 Development Agenda and this
measure responds to that," said
Rodriguez.
President Alvarado said that his
decision is consistent with the
goals that have been established by
the government.

De-carbonisation
Plan 2018-2050,
Costa Rica has
declared its
aspiration to be a
modern, green,
emission-free,
resilient and
inclusive economy,
which requires a
balance between
the long-term
vision and
immediate actions
to move towards an
economy that
promotes the use
and sustainable
use of natural
resources."
