in Barra del Colorado By the A.M. Costa Rica staff President Carlos Alvarado announced the creation of the new Marine Protected Area in Barra del Colorado in Limón Province. "The creation of this new marine area marks a before and after in the way in which the country decides to manage its marine-coastal resources," President Alvarado said. "It is a clear example of the joint and coordinated work of various institutions and communities to create a new vision of our seas.” The new Protected Marine Area, located in the Barra del Colorado area, in the north of Limón, between 7 and 12 miles from the territorial sea and adjacent to the marine border with Nicaragua. With an extension of 667.82 km², the new protected area will conserve the transit and breeding areas of shrimp, lobsters, fish, rays, manta rays, sharks, mammals and sea turtles. Some of these species are threatened and endangered. The process of creating the new protected area lasted eight years and was led by neighboring communities, with the support of public institutions such as the Tortuguero Conservation Area, the National System of Conservation Area, as well as the private organization Forever Costa Rica Association. According to the government, the communities also received funds from the Central American Regional Security Initiative, CARSI, program of the United States Embassy in Costa Rica. "As a community, the creation of the marine management area is very important to face the problem of climate change, which has affected us a lot," said Lilia Briones, president of the Barra del Colorado Association of women workers. "If we do not protect all the species that we have for fishing in Barra del Colorado, the time will come when we will not have anything.” The new marine management area will allow for a recovery of fishing populations, which contribute to maintaining the health of the ecosystem and improves the quality of life of the inhabitants of the surrounding communities who depend on some of these species for food and trade, said the government in its statement. ---------------------------------- What other wild zones should the government declare as a protected area?
