New $300k machines for
ICUs patients

By the  A.M. Costa Rica staff

Hospitals San Juan de Dios and Rafael Ángel Calderón Guardia received Kinesiotherapy machines to perform physical therapy automatically for patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, ICU, announced Social Security on Wednesday.

Nine machines were purchased. Of these seven were installed in San Juan de Dios Hospital and two in Calderón Guardia Hospital. The equipment is made in Germany and each one has a cost of $33,419, for a total investment of $300,771.

Kinesiotherapy machines are for movement therapy and treatment of disease by passive and active muscular movements.

The equipment will be used by critically ill patients with little or no mobility and are designed to perform passive and active limb exercises, and can also be programmed according to the needs of each person.

According to Juan Ignacio Silesky, head of the ICU at the San Juan de Dios Hospital, this new team will be able to start physical therapy on patients admitted to intensive care. The new machines will also reduce the consequences of patients being in bed for a long time.

"For three years ICU patients have been undergoing rehabilitation, now physical therapists with this team will achieve more and better results," Silesky said.

According to specialists, early rehabilitation integrates the prevention and joint management of the long-term functional consequences of a critical illness.

These devices can improve not only physical function but also contribute to the reduction of neuropsychological disorders and improve the quality of life of patients.

Implementing an early rehabilitation program reduces hospital stay, lowers mortality, lowers patient care costs, Social Security said in its statement.

According to specialists, intensive care patients present sequels at the mental, cognitive and physical levels.

These teams are vital for the care of patients admitted to the ICU, including patients infected with covid-19.

According to the most recent report of the Ministry of Health on Wednesday, 334 covid-19 patients are being treated in public hospitals, where 259 patients are in recovery rooms and 75 are in ICU’s, with delicate health conditions.

The ministry provided the following statistics of the status of the virus in the country:

456 new covid-19 cases, bringing the total to 12,617 active cases. The ages of patients infected range from one three-month-old baby to one 100-year-old person.

4,664 foreign-born people have been infected of the 16,800 cases since March, approximately 27% of the total cases.

• 4,050 coronavirus patients have fully recovered, which is a 24% recovery rate.

• 56,356 people have been ruled out.

• 84,815 medical covid-19 tests have been made.

133 deaths of patients infected with covid-19 since March. Which is a 0.8% death rate. Of these 50 were women and 83 men.
