New $228 million-plus Hospital
in Puntarenas begins in 2022

Social Security announced a new hospital project valued at $228,589,654 for Puntarenas Province. Part of the cost will be financed with a loan from the Central American Bank for Economic Integration, CABEI.

According to Social Security, this new hospital will replace the current Monsignor Sanabria hospital and its construction is expected to start in late 2022.

“The new hospital in Puntarenas is the most ambitious project so far in the 21st century, it will be a modern, innovative and highly technological center," said Roberto Cervantes - Barrantes, manager of Social Security. "This is the model of the hospital of the future.”

According to the authorities, the 72,132 square meter hospital project is in the design phase and planned to be located in the Barranca District.

It will have the capacity to serve 316,000 people with 350 hospital beds. The facility will include new services to patients with cancer and cardiovascular diseases.

It will also provide the medical services of Chemotherapy, Cardiology, Emergencies, surgeries, and delivery rooms among many others.



On May, the Social Security announced the construction for a new public clinic in Santa Cruz District in Guanacaste Province, with an investment of $25,025,540.

Services planned for the new clinic include general medicine, nutrition, psychology, palliative care, among others. According to Social Security, the new clinic budget also includes construction and equipment expenses.

The approximately 9,500 square meter clinic will be located on 17,913.84 square meters of land close to the current public clinic in that district.

The new clinic is expected to be inaugurated in 2021.

According to Social Security, Santa Cruz has 13 public clinics, known as Ebais. They employ 203 health workers.
