Most
people infected with covid-19are young adults, say authorities By the A.M. Costa Rica staff According to the most recent report of patients infected with the coronavirus covid-19 in the country, most of them are adults between the ages of 18 and 65. Those hospitalized in intensive care are between the ages of 35 and 50, confirmed the Ministry of Health on Wednesday. "To the young people who think that this is not the issue with them, should know that it may also affect you," said Daniel Salas, Minister of Health. According to Salas, almost 15% of the population over the age of 20 are diabetic and more than 30% experience hypertensiveness, factors that can complicate the disease. In the latest report released on Wednesday, authorities from the ministry confirmed 24 new cases of people infected with coronavirus covid-19, increasing to a total of 201 patients in the country. Of the 201 patients, six are being treated in public hospitals. However, four of them have been reported in very delicate health conditions and are kept in intensive care. The patient’s ages range from 2 to 87 with an average age of 41. Of the total cases, seven patients are children under the age of 13, 177 are between 14 and 70 years old. Seventeen are elder patients over 70 years old. Of those infected, 84 are women (42%) and 117 are men (58%). It was reported 183 infected cases are Costa Ricans and 18 are foreigners. The virus has spread throughout all the provinces, with cases reported in 40 cantons. Since the virus was detected in the country, in the first week of March, 1,684 people have been ruled out. As was previously reported, two patients hospitalized in the intensive care room of the San Rafael Hospital in Alajuela Province, both 87-year-old seniors, have died due to the coronavirus covid-19. Two U.S. citizens have managed to overcome the disease. It is reported that they left the country. On Monday authorities confirmed the improvement of the National Rehabilitation Center to be used as a hospital specialized in treating patients infected with coronavirus covid-19. According to the authorities, $14 million was invested in the remodeling and purchase of specialized equipment. The hospital is located in the canton of La Uruca in San José province. It has 88 beds that could be used if other public hospitals are unable to care for people who could be infected with the virus in the next few weeks. Authorities confirm that the hospital has adequate infrastructure to deal with this pandemic. Among the improvements were the renewal of the electrical network, the installation of an internet network, an area to attend to patients with respiratory deficiencies, air conditioning, X-ray equipment, beds, monitoring screen systems, among others. The hospital will be receiving their first patients infected with coronavirus within the next week, authorities said, in an area with 44 confirmed beds. The rest of the beds are to be installed in April. According to the Social Security statement, in addition to the new hospital they plan on opening more special areas to attend patients in the public hospitals as Monseñor Sanabria in Puntarenas Province, William Allen in Cartago Province, Mexico hospital and Calderón Guardia hospital in San Jose Province, San Carlos hospital in Alajuela Province, among others. So far three public hospitals began lab tests for the detection of coronavirus covid-19. Experts from Hospital México, Hospital San Juan de Dios and National Children’s Hospital are implementing lab tests on people suspected of being infected with the coronavirus. Only Social Security labs located throughout the country are giving the results within 12 hours. As of today, the pandemic has killed 22,067 people around the world, according to recent statistics reported by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, CDC. --------------------------- Should the Ministry of Health authorities enable more virus lab tests in other hospitals or clinics?
