More than
600 drivers fined for breaking ban on night driving By the A.M. Costa Rica staff Traffic Police have fined 620 drivers within twelve hours, from Saturday at 8 p.m. to Sunday at 5 a.m., for breaking the government-imposed driving restriction due to the crisis caused by the increase in coronavirus covid-19 infected patients in the country. On Sunday the Social Security authorities reported 314 patients infected with the virus. According to the police report, the vehicle restriction on weekends is from 5 p.m. until 5 a.m. the next day. On weekdays, the restriction starts at 8 p.m. and ends at 5 a.m. the next day. According to the traffic police, since the day the vehicle restriction began on Wednesday, more than 1,422 drivers have been fined. According to authorities, the night driving band will continue until further notice. Authorities call on people to stay home and not drive at night unless it is an emergency. The infraction for those who drive at night, without being on the exception list, is $40. This fine will be registered under the license plate number in the database of the Road Safety Council, COSEVI. The fine can be paid at any local bank. Due to the increase of fines for driving at night, authorities of the Ministry of Health ordered the closure from 8 p.m. on weekends of all public places such as restaurants, gas stations, supermarkets, cinemas, shopping malls, drugstores, among others. However, places that provide food delivery or medicine services are exempt from the new rule. To decrease the fines for driving at night, the government announced on Friday that it will present to the deputies of the Legislative Assembly a new bill to increase the cost of traffic fines from $40 to $187. The goal is for people to stay indoors during restricted hours to avoid the fine. The following is a list of exceptions to the night driving ban rule: - Transport trucks with commercial goods. - People must use public transport vehicles such as taxis or buses in the case of an emergency as going to the clinic, hospital or even the airport. - All private transport like Uber is still prohibited. - People who must drive to their jobs at night. It is imperative to carry a letter from the company stating the place and hours of work. - Trucks that transport fuel to the gas stations. - Garbage collection trucks. - Police, ambulance or firefighter vehicles. - Workers of public services such as water, electricity, telephone, internet. - Funeral service vehicles. - Home delivery services such as food, pharmacy or veterinary emergencies. - Private security vehicles. - Vehicles of international organizations that aid in the care of the national state of emergency. - Workers of medical services organizations such as hospitals, clinics or nursing homes. ------------------------------ Are people going out at night during the driving night ban in your community?
