More than 13,000 face shields
donated to Social Security

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

Social Security received the donation of 13,200 face shields made by teachers and employees of the National Institute of Learning and the Technological University.

"These supplies represent a great opportunity to provide adequate personal protective equipment to workers who are in the direct care of health services, and also to show the capacity that our country has in the development of this type of devices in times when there are supply difficulties throughout the world,” said Román Macaya, president of Social Security.

The project for the production of face shields was carried out in the institute's laboratory, with the guide of specialists from Social Security.

"This project allowed our team to develop new knowledge that will later be transferred to the productive sector, which will also impact the process of economic reactivation," said Andrés Valenciano, director of the Institute.

According to Social Security, an inventory valued at more than $103 million is maintained in the medical supplies storage area, in products such as medications, medical supplies, hospital clothing, among many others. Products held in storage are expected to supply hospitals and clinics for up to three months, Social Security said.

Donations from other organizations and countries are kept in the same warehouse, such as donations received from the governments of the United States, China and the United Arab Emirates.

Managing donations of medical supplies in a safe place is vital to ensure the supply of medical products to health workers who are at the forefront of the fight against covid-19.

On Tuesday, the Ministry of Health provided the following statistics of the status of the virus in the country:

• 190 new cases of patients infected with covid-19, bringing the total to 2,007 active cases.

• The ages of infected patients range from a three-month-old baby to a 94-year-old person.

• There are 966 foreigners infected of the 3,459 people infected since March. That is approximately 28% of the total cases.

• 44 patients are being treated in public hospitals, where 39 are in recovery rooms and 5 are in an ICU, with delicate health conditions. Most of the infected patients are quarantined in their homes.

• 1,436 coronavirus patients have fully recovered. That is equal to 41% of the total of cases.

• 29,161 people have been ruled out.

• 41,680 medical covid-19 tests have been made.

• 16 deaths have been reported from patients infected with covid-19 since March, seven women and nine men.

The updated number of total patients in each district can be reached at the National Distance Education University on its
Covid-19 Map.

As of Tuesday night, the pandemic has killed 510,632 patients worldwide, according to recent statistics reported by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University.
