Investment of almost $9 million
in Puntarenas to attract tourism

The government through the Costa Rican Institute of Pacific Ports, INCOP, announced an investment of $8,909,014 in infrastructure improvement projects, hoping to revive tourism in Puntarenas Province.

According to the Institute, the investment is from the institution's funds and focuses on 19 infrastructure improvement projects such as construction, cleaning and security for citizens.

"Tourism is the most important industry in Puntarenas, it is the one that provides the most jobs, income and productive chains in the province," said Juan Ramón- Rivera, president of the Institute. "INCOP is an institution to invest in tourism, so we bet on the development of works with an emphasis on this sector to reactivate the economy of this region after the impact of the covid-19 pandemic.”

According to information provided by the Institute, the developed projects are:

- Construction of a footpath for tourists in Coco Beach and construction of restrooms and garbage collection center in Isla San Lucas. The amount invested was $175,581. The constructions have an advancement of more than 90%.

- Repairs in sports grounds in the Barrio el Carmen community, at a cost of $379,256. The construction will be finished in the last week of May.

- Construction of the 100-student enrolled Sinem-Cema Music School located in the Coto Brus district. The new school, expected to be inaugurated in June of this year, seeks to increase attendance to 235 students. The construction cost was $312,535.

- Construction of a scenic-view path in Canton de Golfito. A scenic viewpoint, so-called an observation point, is an elevated location where people can view and joy a natural landscape.

This landscape observation path is being built in the Paseo Marino de Golfito tourist center. The cost is $56,186. This project is in the approval phase of construction permits. However, the institute hopes to be able to open the scenic view path this year.

- Improvements to the building of the former San Lucas jail, located on the island of the same name. The building of the old jail is a historical heritage of Costa Rica, so the construction project could last between four to six months. The remodeling budget is $851,570.

- Construction of a suspension bridge in Mata Limón Bay. The project seeks to rescue a tourist site that was popular 8 years ago when tourists arrived by train and crossed the bay using an old bridge. The bridge collapsed in 2012 due to a 7.8 magnitude earthquake with an epicenter in the Nicoya district, Guanacaste Province. The cost of building the new stand is $2,293,096. Currently, the institute is in the phase of receiving proposals from construction companies to develop this project.

- Construction of a port in Isla Chira. This will be the first port on the island to be used by local fishermen, sport fishing companies and a yacht berth. The budget is $1,058,757. The institute is in the phase of receiving proposals from construction companies to develop this project.

- Remodeling of the Mora y Cañas Park. This park is a national heritage site of great importance to the country’s history. This is the place where two historical figures were executed in 1860. Juan Rafael Mora- Porras, president of the country from 1849 to 1859, and José María Cañas- Escamilla, who was a Costa Rican General in 1859. The remodeling of the historic site has a cost of $992,387. It is still in the process of receiving proposals from construction companies to develop this project.

- Construction of an artisan market in Monteverde. This project includes 25 commercial premises, an amphitheater with bleachers, food and kitchen area, administrative office, common open spaces to develop artistic activities, parking, green areas, among others. The estimated cost is $561,861. The project is in the process of obtaining construction permits from other public institutions.

- Construction of the Artisans Market in downtown Puntarenas. This project includes 60 spots for artisans and areas for folkloric activities. The budget is $519,721. The project is in the initial design phase.

Other projects that are in the design phase are, expansion and improvements in the boulevard of the community of El Roble, construction of a boulevard in the community of Punta Zancudo, construction of ports in Bahia Drake, Pithaya Beach, Isla Venado, Isla Tortuga, Playa Zancudo, Playa Pavones, among others.

It is estimated that by the end of this year, the Institute will announce updated progress in these projects
