closed for two weeks

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

The Ministry of Transport reported that the suspension of services related to driver accreditation will continue until Friday, May 15.

All services related to driver's license procedures will be suspended as a preventive measure in the face of the health emergency that affects the country.

The characteristics of the building facilities of the General Direction of Road, the location where all the services related to driver license is provided, usually entails keeping a large number of workers within the offices and in addition to attending to the public which is an issue during this pandemic.

All services related to new, renewed or homologation of driving licenses will not be provided, that includes driving tests.

Also, the practical tests were canceled, for that reason the ministry allows people to reschedule another appointment after May 18.

Services will resume normally on Monday, May 18, the ministry said.

Due to the closure, the grace period for drivers whose license has expired, from March 20 to May 15, will not be fined.

"It is important to clarify that the people whose license has expired before March 20, can not apply for this grace period," said the ministry. That means those people who were already driving with an expired license can be fined.

The same grace period applies to drivers with a foreign license. To all foreigners whose driver license expired after March 20, will be automatically extended until May 15.

After May 18, services related to the renewal of licenses and driving licenses can be managed at Banco de Costa Rica.

To resolve inquiries about driver's licenses, including foreigners, the ministry has enabled the line (506) 2523-2000.
