In Costa Rica, Mother's Day will be celebrated on Sunday, Aug. 15. It is an official holiday, which means the day off will be moved to Monday.
The long weekend goal is to boost tourism with family getaways. Domestic tourists flock to the beaches and countryside. The holiday is a lucrative one for businesses.
Costa Ricans have a famous saying, "Usted ya hizo su Agosto?" The saying translates in English to, “have you already made your August?” The peculiar question applies when someone manages to make a profit in business, referring to the increase in sales in stores during the month for the holiday.
Also, most public institutions, such as banks, ministries, schools, as well as embassies will be closed on Monday. No employee is forced to work on Monday, but if the worker and boss agree, the employee must receive an extra day's salary if they have to work on the holiday, according to the Ministry of Labor.
The holiday is an opportunity for expat mothers to celebrate mother's day twice.
A.M. Costa Rica created a short list of places to make Sunday all that more special to the mother in your life. Remember to follow the sanitary guidelines to avoid getting infected by covid-19, such as: wearing a mask, staying 6 feet away from others, constant hand-washing, avoiding crowds and poorly ventilated spaces. Don’t forget to take into account the driving restrictions as part of your plans for the weekend.
