Baby born of a mother with covid-19 is not infected with the virus By the A.M. Costa Rica staff On Saturday night, a woman infected with covid-19 gives birth to a healthy baby girl, according to Social Security authorities. The 30-year-old infected woman gave birth on Saturday at 8:14 p.m. to a girl at the San Juan de Dios Hospital. Immediately the medical examination was carried out on the newborn to verify if she presented the covid-19 virus, which resulted in negative. This is the first case of a baby born to a woman infected with the virus in the country. "The woman, 38 weeks pregnant, and who originally had a cesarean section scheduled for Tuesday, had to be admitted to the hospital this Saturday and had a successful operation," said Mario Ruiz-Cubillo, medical manager for Social Security. After the cesarean procedure, the mother and daughter are in joint accommodation, where they are kept in isolation from other patients. It is expected that today, the mother and daughter will be able to leave the hospital and continue with the isolation quarantine at home. According to specialists, the mother must carry out a series of security measures, so as not to infect her daughter. She should maintain a distance from her daughter for two weeks, the recommended quarantine measure. She will only have physical contact when breastfeeding, and during that short time she must wear a face mask. She should also put some type of plastic protector between herself and the baby. The mother should maintain constant hand washing and wearing the face mask 24/7. It is expected that in two weeks the mother may have overcome the illness and continue a normal regimen with her daughter. ![]() The virus continues infecting people in the country, but with fewer new cases per day than last month.
