Alert on CovidLock app malwareBy the A.M. Costa Rica staff On Thursday specialists from the Ministry of Technology issued an alert to the public about the app titled CovidLock that offers services related to the prevention of coronavirus covid-19 . According to the experts, the malware CovidLock app is designed to be downloaded on smartphones or any device that uses the Android operating system. The malware app pretends to notify when a person infected with the coronavirus is near. The app offers a fake heat-detection system to display the infected person on a map. In other words, the app detects when a person infected with the coronavirus is nearby. Specialists warn that there is no such application or software that can detect a virus-infected patient location. The only way to confirm if a person is infected with a virus is through lab tests. However, once the app is installed, what really happens is a bot that can block the security code access to the device. The only way to unlock the device is to make a payment of $100 in bitcoins in exchange for a password that unlocks the screen and returns control of the device to the owner, specialists said in their statement. If the victim does not pay the so-called access rescue fee of $100 within 48 hours the CovidLock application proceeds to display a message threatening to delete all files that are stored in the device. The message reads: "Your GPS is monitored and your location is known. If you try to do something stupid, the information on your device will be automatically deleted." This message is designed to intimidate the victim to avoid from filing to the authorities, said the Ministry of Technology in their statement. Specialists alerted the population about this new type of app malware. In case a person falls victim to this application, it is recommended to: - Never pay to the hackers - Always download an antivirus verified app, before downloading any other application - Always search for the origin of the developers of the applications. - Never download applications or access links that have been shared on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or WhatsApp. - Stay updated about the evolution of coronavirus covid-19 or any other public issue through official legitimate sources. The specialists call on the population to report any suspicious malware apps to a confidential line, 800-8000-645. Bilingual agents will be on call to answer calls in English or Spanish. A.M. Costa Rica urges readers to share this alert with their contacts. --------------------------- Have you heard about sites that offer applications to remotely detect ineffective people with viruses?
