Citizen's movement asks president to
dismiss Board of Notables for being obsolete

By A.M. Costa Rica staff

The Costa Rican Coalition Citizens Movement asked President Carlos Alvarado to call off the meeting of notables he named in June. The movement said it considers the board obsolete and an anachronism historically characterized by excluding important social and political sectors of society. The board was formed to analyze specific problems the president wants addressed and provide proposals to face the problem.

The group, which has more than 265,000 Internet users and supported Alvarado in the last electoral campaign, sent a letter to the president and other members of the executive branch June 29 The letter was made public on Monday night.

The brief also informed Alvarado of the coalition's disapproval of the appointments of former vice president Kevin Casas, who served in 2006 and 2007, and former legislator Mario Redondo, who served from 2002 to 2006 and from 2014 to 2018.

The swearing-in of the former vice president of the second administration of Óscar Arias sparked criticism of the president, since Casas is one of the authors of the so-called memorandum of fear, a controversial document that many considered to be aimed at manipulating citizens in favor of the Free Trade Agreement with the United States in 2007. The agreement later was approved in a referendum.

Vice President Rodolfo Piza has said Alvarado wants to dissolve the division created in the country between those who voted yes and those who voted no to the agreement.

According to the movement, the Board of Notables does not belong in a modern democracy.

In the letter, the group said "We consider that these types of political bodies follow old expressions of democracy” which they see as non-inclusive. They said they see today’s democracy as requiring inclusiveness and the participation of civil society.

The letter was prepared based on 48 hours of consultation through the communication platforms of the Costa Rica Coalition.

U.S citizen found murdered in Alajuela

By AM Costa Rica staff

William Nearhoff was found bound, gagged,  and dead of stab wounds in Grecia, Alajuela, Tuesday morning, according to the Ministry of Public Security and the Costa Rican Red Cross.

According to authorities, Nearhoff was 70 years old and had been living in the country for the past four years at a building west of the Plaza de Grecia.

Police reported the man was gagged that his hands and feet tied. Local media cited neighbors saying the man was known in the area and used to organize meetings at his home.

The body was found due to a strong odor detected by several lawyers whose firm is in the same building, according to the Red Cross members who first arrived to the site.

Police officers and detectives of the Judicial Investigation Organization were called and arrived to pick up the body. The case is now under investigation by the organization which hopes to determine the causes of the crime and identify the murderers.

Nicaraguan students request a place
at the University of Costa Rica
Rectangulo110117.jpg

By A.M. Costa Rica staff

The displacement of university students due to the wave of political protest against President Daniel Ortega in Nicaragua has caused at least 70 Nicaraguan nationals to request access to the University of Costa Rica, according to its Office of International Affairs and External Cooperation.

Of these requests, four have already been accepted while the remaining 66 would get an answer in the next few days, according to the office.

The university could have offered these students a place for a semester, a year or a year and a half under old institutional regulations, but those had already expired March 30.

The university said that an extension of the deadline will allow students to send their documents no later than Friday in order to resume their studies in the second semester of this year.

The head of the International Affairs Office, Leonora De Lemos, confirmed that the university has been the center of many applications from Nicaraguan students who wish to continue their studies in Costa Rica.

De Lemos said the students admitted temporarily would be accepted as exchanges and stressed the responsibility that the institution has to receive the requests of Nicaraguans.

De Lemos said the applications come from students born in Nicaragua or those who have dual nationality.

The university is asking them to present their certified university status once they complete their entry procedures.

Costa Rica seeks to be World Recycling
Champion next weekend

By A.M. Costa Rica staff

If Costa Ricans collect 25 tons of reusable material, the country could acquire the Guinness record as the nation that has collected the most in history, according to Karla Cháves, director of Ecolones Initiative, a non-profit organization that seeks to pay people who collect and recycle their trash.

The marathon begins today and continues until Saturday at the following locations: in Alajuela material will be collected in the parking lot of the Banco Nacional branch, diagonal to Servicentro La Tropicana, in Cartago collection will be at Metrocentro Parking, in Heredia the parking lot of the Utility Company of Heredia was designated, and in San José the collection will take place at the Parque de Antojitos, Montes de Oca.

Sunday one last gathering will take place at La Sabana Metropolitan Park.

"The bottles and plastic containers are the main product that will be collected, among which we find PET and HDPE bottles. The first ones are the most recognizable for storing water, juices and sodas, while the latter are of higher density and are usually found in shampoos, creams or liquid soaps," said Chávez.

Legislator Cruickshank says he will donate
his first salary to 30 Evangelical churches in Limón

By A.M. Costa Rica staff

National Restoration lawmaker Eduardo Newton Cruickshank said he decided to donate his first salary to 30 churches in the province of Limón, based on a verse of the Bible that speaks of honoring Jehovah with the first fruits of all your fruits.

"I took my salary and gave it because I believe in a Biblical principle of blessing and honoring with the first fruits of my work as a legislator," he said in a press statement released Tuesday. He said he donated ¢3,126,783.

The lawmaker pointed out that, "he believes in the principle of honoring God and honoring the men and women who work to establish the Kingdom of God in all the earth."

The legislator said he has a relationship with all of the beneficiary churches, although he declined to give names and amounts.

"I would like to keep the list private because, during the campaign, I could have visited 300 churches, and if I provide a list, they claim why them, not the others, and I had to prioritize it," he said.

Cruickshank, a pastor and lawyer, was one of three legislators elected by the National Restoration Party in the province of Limón, where his party got 31,944 of the 141,860 votes received in the legislative elections.

Taxi driver's demonstration leaves two arrested

By A.M. Costa Rica staff

The march of taxi drivers against the Uber ride service resulted in two detainees Tuesday night. The pair are accused of snatching and tearing apart the cell phone of a woman who was recording the demonstration, according to the Ministry of Public Security.

Additionally, the demonstrators struggled with the police who intervened in the situation. Detainees were delivered to the authorities and will be prosecuted for resisting arrest, according to Marlon Cubillo, the regional head of the police force in San José.

The Security minister, Michael Soto, said the job of the police is to ensure the free movement of citizens despite the demonstrations.

This was the first of two marches announced by the guild of taxi drivers for the month of July. The next one is scheduled for July 16.
