San Carlos schools reopen after parent protests

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

The San Carlos schools that were closed on February 7th and 8th due to parent protests over sexual education topics opened their doors on Monday.

The Ministry of Public Education (MEP) confirmed that on Monday the protesters complied with the agreement reached last Friday at 5:58 p.m. The agreement consisted of the following points:

- Parents agreed to remove the chains and locks so that the students could start their school year, while the Minister of Education, Sonia Marta Mora, agreed to meet with representatives and two parents in the Regional Office of San Carlos.

The National Director of Student Life of the MEP, Kartia Grosser, maintained a constant dialogue with the parents of students from Montecristo schools, Carlos Salazar, Vuelta Kooper, Garabito, Cerro Cortés, Las Palmeras, José Rodriguez, San Francisco, Santa Rosa, San Jose, Viento Fresco, Santa Fe, San Francisco School and Puerto Escondido .

According to Grosser, MEP is open to listening to the parents' disagreements but also wants to ease parental concerns and clarify incorrect statements that exist around the Education for Affectivity and Integral Sexuality.

Last week, at least 15 schools remained shut because dozens of parents closed the classrooms with chains and locks while waving posters and broadcasting via social networks.

The so-called Guías Sexuales have sparked numerous protests among conservative groups.

At the time, they said they would not allow their children get this kind of education.

Mora urged all parents to come to the schools to clarify their doubts and asked them not to believe and repeat erroneous statements circulating in the networks and text messages. It is all part of a campaign of manipulation and misinformation, she said.

Security Minister meets with new patrol boat trainers
Rectangulo110117.jpg
By A.M. Costa Rica staff

On Tuesday, the Minister of Public Security, Gustavo Mata, held a meeting with the 44 officers of the National Coastguard Service who will make up the crews of the two patrol boats donated by the United States.

The activity took place at the shipyard owned by the U.S. Coast Guard in Baltimore, Maryland, where the 44 Costa Rican officers are receiving three-months of training so that they can properly command, navigate and maintain the two 110-foot patrol boats.

The vessels, named 110-1 Libertador Juan Rafael Mora and 110-2 General José María Cañas, will be the biggest ships in the history of the police force of Costa Rica.

The U.S. Ambassador to Costa Rica, Sharon Day, the Costa Rican ambassador to the United States, Román Macaya, the director of the National Coast Guard Service, Commissioner Martin Arias, and U.S. Congressmen also participated in the event.

Mata pointed out that the Costa Rican government has not limited itself to receiving valuable resources from friendly states, but is making substantial investments in the fight against crime.

As an example, the Minister said that Costa Rica is acquiring four boats, which will be deployed on the Caribbean coast to combat trafficking of marijuana from Jamaica.

He added that a King Air aircraft would also be purchased. All of these will be part of the new resources in the fight against crime.

The U.S. Ambassador to Costa Rica, Sharon Day, the Costa Rican ambassador to the United States, Román Macaya, the director of the National Coast Guard Service, Commissioner Martin Arias, and U.S. Congressmen also participated in the event.

Mata stressed that Costa Rica, along with its police forces, seized more than 30 tons of cocaine, much more than countries with armed forces did.

The U.S. ambassador showed her satisfaction with the improvement of security in our country: "A safer Costa Rica means a safer United States. It has been an honor to cooperate to strengthen the security of one of our best allies in the region," she said.

The vessels are the biggest in the history of Costa Rican police forces.

Cops urge the purchase of non-lethal weapons

By AM Costa Rica staff

The attacks on police officers during operations in dangerous areas made their the union raise its.

On Saturday a group of officers of the Public Force was attacked in Villa Bonita de Siquirres when they tried to confiscate a motorcycle and on Sunday a policeman was shot in the arm while fighting to disarm a suspected criminal.

Due to these and similar situations, the police force insists that it is necessary that officers have weapons such as tasers for electric shocks or at least a pepper spray.

This was stated by the trade union leader of the Public Force, Minor Anchía, who insists that it is also necessary to modify the law so that an assault on a police officer can be punished with greater severity.

The Minister of Security, Gustavo Mata, admitted that the acquisition of non-lethal equipment has been under evaluation since June 2017, when a crowd of neighbors attacked a group of police officers after a football match in Santa Clara de San Carlos.

Weapons021418.jpg
A.M. Costa Rica wire services photo
Representatives of police insist on the urgent need to provide security forces with non-lethal weapons.

Anchía believes that the purchase of non-lethal weapons has been postponed due to a lack of will and not because of a lack of budget.

In Costa Rica, there is no restriction against the use of non-lethal weapons by police officers.

Chamber of Commerce launches innovation center

By A.M Costa Rica staff

To promote the development of a culture of innovation in Small and Medium Enterprises (SME's) the Costa Rica Chamber of Commerce launched its Business Innovation Center, called the SME 2.0 Project.

Its objective is to manage strategic innovation processes within companies through a learning experience and application of new knowledge in real time. This will help companies promote growth and productive development of global impact.

One of the central goals is to promote the development of a culture of innovation within SMEs and, through a process of accompaniment, promote the transition from a linear organization to an exponential one.

This is the only project that includes eight work areas that have been seen to impact the achievement of the objectives. These include strategic planning, innovation management, implementation of prototyping processes, marketing strategies, circular economy development, intellectual property strategies, crowdfunding processes and design management.

Karol Fallas, Coordinator of the Business Innovation Center, explained that "in this first stage all SMEs that comply with the requirements can register. Then 100 will be selected to receive training and tailor-made partnership for a full year."

SME's that show an annual profit margin in growth in the last three years are interested in participating in global markets and show an organizational culture open to change can participate.

Innovation021418.jpg
Costa Rica Chamber of Commerce courtesy photo
Innovation through the use of technology is one of the program goals.

Among the main requirements for SMEs that wish to participate are: being legally constituted; have up-to-date payments with the Social Security Fund, complete the registration form and have taxes and payments in order.

"The Business Innovation Center of the Chamber of Commerce of Costa Rica is made possible thanks to the good relationship we have built with the Ministry of Economy, through the Al Invest 5.0 project of the Chamber of Commerce of Costa Rica. The total cost of the project for associates will be $100 per month and for non-associates $166 for the year of advice," Fallas added.

Sony Pictures buys Costa Rican film
Rectangulo110117.jpg
By A.M. Costa Rica staff

Sony Pictures Entertainment acquired the Costa Rican film “Amor Viajero” for distribution in Latin America.

The film was directed by Miguel Gómez and produced by Dennis Gómez, from Atómica Films, with the support of the DoubleDigit agency.

Sony will be able to launch and distribute the film it in countries such as Mexico, Colombia, and Brazil.

"We are very satisfied with this purchase, it reflects the quality of the work and the importance of offering people audiovisual products that are striking and well made, with global standards that can be displayed on multiple platforms and international audiences," said Goméz.

“We are happy that “Amor Viajero” will now increase its presence and will be seen by a very broad audience throughout Latin America," added Goméz.

“Amor Viajero” is a romantic comedy recorded in different locations in Costa Rica and several European countries. It's performed by the comedian Renzo Rímolo, the actress Monserrat Montero, the blogger and comedian Boris Sossa and Diego Wolff, a social networks star.

This film was one of the most viewed productions nationwide and even returned to several cinemas by request of the public.

According to José Francisco Coto, executive co-producer of “Amor Viajero” and CEO of DoubleDigit, achieving the sale of the film to Sony represents technical, visual and content quality.

"This transaction shows us the importance of investing in quality and of maximizing the standard of national productions so that they become an attractive product that is profitable and recognized.”

"We have been characterized by offering products of high visual and sound quality, designed to be eye-catching for viewers, this year Atómica Films will innovate in formats and scripts, in order to maintain the successful process of creating good and profitable material," he said.

Poás Volcano could re-open at the end of March

By A.M. Costa Rica staff

After ten months of temporary closure due to eruptive activity, the Poás Volcano Park will reopen its doors to the public at the end of March, provided that a series of security measures are met.

The director of the central region of the National System of Conservation Areas (SINAC), Rafael Gutiérrez, pointed out that authorities of group and the National Commission of Emergencies will re-evaluate the re-opening of the National Park. Re-opening will depend in part on a decrease in volcanic activity and an inspection of the remodeling of the areas affected by the explosions.

The Poás Volcano National Park is one of the most visited sites of its type in Costa Rica, and the prohibition of approaching less than five kilometers from its summit caused heavy losses to businesses in the area, famous for the production of strawberries and a large number of other foods. Plant nurseries in the area have also been closed.

One of the most important security measures to be implemented before the park opens is the installation of gas meters. These meters must be installed in all areas of public use. In addition, the area must be labeled with visitor information and a tourist refuge must be built to provide shelter for tourists in case of an eruption.

The Poás Volcano National Park is one of the most visited place in Costa Rica.

Officials and volunteers also need to be trained on what to do in the event of an eruption.

A SINAC executive said that they will get to work to meet these conditions as soon as possible, taking into account that Holy Week this year is from March 25 to April 1.

Liberty Latin America purchases 80% of local cable operator

By A.M. Costa Rica staff

On Monday, the transnational company Liberty Latin America with operations in Chile, Panama and the Caribbean, announced it reached an agreement for the acquisition of 80% of the firm Cabletica, in a transaction worth ¢114 billion.

The international company values Cabletica at a total amount of ¢143 billion.

Liberty's total evaluation of Cabletica is equivalent to 6.3 times the EBITDA (profits before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) of the company, until now subsidiary of Televisora de Costa Rica (Teletica), Channel seven.

The current owners - the Picado Cozza family - will keep 20%, through the television division.

The Cabletica coaxial fiber network covers some 562,000 homes, which would be equivalent to 40% of the country's homes. The total number of subscribers exceeds 327,000.

Liberty will pay for the acquisition in a lump sum. The purchase will be financed with debt and cash resources.

This transaction excludes the contents that belong to Teletica, some of which will continue to be scheduled regularly. The Alliance for the production of the exclusive channels TD + and TD + 2 will also be kept.
